Thursday June 28 in Washington, DC, U.S. Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo and Presidential Advisor Ivanka Trump released the annual Trafficking in Persons Report. Secretary Pompeo noted that, "This year’s TIP Report highlights the critical work of local communities to stop traffickers and provide support to victims. Human trafficking is a global problem, but it’s a local one too. Local communities are an essential part of the solution," adding that the United States has a deep commitment to combating human trafficking.

In Port au Prince, U.S. Ambassador to Haiti Michele Sison noted, "We will continue to work with Haiti as the country works to finalize a National Trafficking in Persons Action Plan. The adoption of this Plan, combined with strengthening the ability of the judiciary to prosecute traffickers, represent critical steps to progress in our common objective to end human trafficking worldwide."

As required by the U.S. Trafficking Victims Protection Act, the TIP Report assesses government efforts around the world to combat human trafficking and highlights strategies to address this crime and protect the victims.

This year’s report, the 18th installment, includes narratives for 187 countries and territories, including the United States. The U.S. government has forged partnerships with other countries, international organizations, and NGOs to fight human trafficking. These projects are global, regional, national, and local in scope and reflect a variety of anti-trafficking efforts consistent with the “3P” paradigm of Prosecution, Protection, and Prevention, such as providing law enforcement training, comprehensive victim services, and raising public awareness.

Let's recall that during the past year, support from the United States has enabled grantees, including in Haiti, to assist in the development and enactment of anti-trafficking laws, increase capacity and awareness to combat human trafficking, and meet the varied protection needs of victims.
