Haiti - Les Cayes : Extension of the system of potable water supply

The National Directorate of Water Supply and Sanitation (DINEPA) conducts important work in the city of Les Cayes (South Department). The works consists to the rehabilitation and the extension of the system of potable water supply, and includes the construction of a distribution network of potable water, the strengthening of the well field and the construction of pumping stations and the establishment of an elevated tank of 1500 m3.

This project, financed by the Interamerican Development Bank (IDB) has the main objective to increase the capacity of water service, to establish a new management structure to ensure better use of resources and the sustainability of the newly constructed infrastructure.

The first phase of of the project consists to the realization of works on the general distribution network. They are provided by the French firm "Farmex Technologies" in association with "Hydrasa" a Haitian firm. The works of these two companies have started in April 2010. The activities to be implemented under this phase are:

Supply and installation of 27 km of pipes in HDPE (High Density Polyethylene), whose diameters range from 63mm and 315mm;
Supply and installation of valves, elbows, tees and other accessories;
The construction of 10 structures of suction (de ventouse), and 10 sewage works;
The realization of stops (butées) and six (6) valve chambers;
The installation of 23 fire hydrants;
The establishment of 6,000 connections.

The work are done at 40%. About 17 km of pipes have been laid and 1,000 connections have already been made.

The American firm "Futurnet Group Ing" is responsible for implementing the second phase and final phase of the project. The advance payment was paid to the firm and work began in early February 2011. Such works include the construction of 4 pumping stations, the construction of a technical building of 150 m2 fully equipped, the installation of 4 groups totaling 200 kilowatts of power, the installation of a generator of 250 kW the construction of an elevated tank of 1,500 m3 at Carrefour Quatre Chemins.

The works still to perform will be:

External development of the plot where the reservoir is located with the demolition of the old existing plant and the erection of a fence;
The connection of the supply system already existing in the town of Les Cayes to the new tank of Quatre Chemins;
The installation of equipment for drilling built during the first phase of the project;
The sewage works construction;
The supply and installation of 560 linear meters of ductile iron pipes with a diameter ranging from 150mm to 300mm.
