On the night from Sunday to Monday, July 16, nearly 15 convicted prisoners, about to be transferred to other prison centers, tried to escape the civil prison of Gonaïves, confirmed Me Marie Paul Clerjuste Valentin, the Commissioner of the Government of Gonaïves.

5 detainees wanted to oppose this escape and were brutally assaulted and seriously injured by detainees determined to escape at all costs.

Without the rapid intervention of the National Police of Haiti (PNH) who has taken control of the situation, this attempt at escape could have been worse, said the Commissioner of the Government

Following a search of the overcrowded cell where lived in inhumane conditions, more than 100 detainees, several objects were seized including among others: cutting pliers, hacksaws and razor blades used by the detainees in their failed escape. According to Inspector Jean-Marie Rochenel, spokesman for the PNH, these objects were obtained thanks to the complicity of former prisoners, stating that the escape plan was foiled thanks to the intervention of the cell major, announces Petit-Frère, who informed the guards of the escape project in time.

Me Marie Paul Clerjuste Valentin, confirms that no prison inmate managed to escape and that following this attempt, security was strengthened around the prison.
