Haiti - FLASH : The Bahamas will demolish all slums where Haitians live

The Government of the Bahamas, known for its severe repression against Haitians in irregular migratory situation, much worse than in the Dominican Republic, announced the demolition of slums throughout the archipelago where Haitian immigrants live crammed in unsanitary conditions.

Recall that the number of our compatriots living in the Bahamas was estimated in 2014 at nearly 70,000 people (18% of the Bahamian population) and that between 20,000 to 50,000 of them lived illegally on the territory of the Bahamas (according to the International Organization for Migration). The number of Haitian migrants on Bahamian soil is estimated at over 80,000 (November 2017).

The Prime Minister of the Bahamas, Hubert Minnis recalled that this decision was not new and that it had been communicated to the League of Haitian pastors a few months ago as well as the objective of the Government to improve the conditions of the life of all Bahamas claiming, "It is unfair to allow slums to stay, especially in view of the social and other problems often encountered in these areas, it is imperative for the country to eliminate these shanty towns, even if we are involved in immigration reform."

He stressed that his government is committed to social justice and will end all slums inhabited by Haitians to improve their quality of life, a long-standing problem that successive governments have never addressed comprehensively, adding "We We have taken care to treat this issue in a comprehensive and compassionate way."

Except it should be remembered that this same Prime Minister Minnis "understanding and compassionate" had also given until 31 December 2017 to all migrants living illegally in the Bahamas, whatever their nationality to voluntarily return to their country origin. Preventing that after this time they will be pursued without respite, arrested and expelled from the Bahamas.

The systematic destruction of all slums will give the Government of the Bahamas the opportunity to uncover all illegal immigrants on its territory and to stalk Haitians relentlessly like in 2014 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-12477-haiti-politic-the-hunt-for-illegals-is-open-to-the-bahamas.html but on a larger scale.
