Haiti - Economy : Challenges of the development of the mining sector in Haiti

Friday, the Steering Committee and the Technical Secretariat for the Organization of the Sectoral General States of the Nation (EGSN) organized a working session with the Bureau of Mines and Energy (BME) on issues related to the development of the mining sector in Haiti.

This meeting allowed Geology Engineer Claude Prépetit, Director General of the BME, to clarify the country's mineral resources through the presentation of the map of the mining and energy potential of Haiti.

Prepetit spoke of a concentration of gold and copper deposits in the great north, notably in Bossa (Milot) and Camp Cop (Limbé). He also spoke of the existence of raw materials for the manufacture of cement in almost all departments of the country, while the cement market in Haiti is currently dominated by the Dominican Republic. As for the department of the Center it emphasized that this one abounds with clay which could be used in the manufacture of blockwork for the construction of the houses.

Claude Prépetit has indicated a set of mechanisms prior to put in place to get to exploit this mining potential. Among these prerequisites, he mentioned the construction of a strong State, the strengthening of institutions and the adoption of a new legal framework recalling that the draft law governing this sector, tabled in Parliament was not voted until now.

He believes that conditions are not yet in place for the exploitation of these resources and insists on the need for a national consensus on the mining issue.

For his part Louis Naud Pierre, Executive Secretary of the Committee said that this working session with the Bureau des Mines should lead to the organization of a forum on the mining sector within the framework of the Sectoral General States of the Nation.
