Haiti - Politic : A presidential candidate plans to close 3 consulates

The presidential candidate of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), Francisco Domínguez Brito, proposed Tuesday the closure of three Dominican consulates in Haiti.

At a press conference, the former senator and former attorney general suggested leaving only the consulates of Port-au-Prince and Juana Méndez open.

The PLD central committee member also criticized the fact that the Dominican consulates are issuing between 80,000 and 120,000 visas each year in Haiti, which he considers as "a disproportionate quantity".

Dominguez Brito argued that the consulates of Belladère, Anse-à-Pitre and Cap-Haitien "have no reason to be".

At the same time, he found it "inadmissible and painful" that to seek a visa in Haiti, the applicant is not obliged to visit the consulates personally.

The Dominican Republic, according to the former Minister of the Environment, "is the only country in the world" to grant this privilege to Haitians.
