Haiti - Grand'Anse : Towards sustainable management of land and natural resources
The Ministry of the Environment in partnership with the United Nations Food Fund (FAO) recently proceeded in Jérémie, at the official launch of the component of "Awareness, Environmental Education and Training on the fight against desertification, for management land and natural resources" of the EU-funded "Action against Desertification"(ACD) Project.

In his speech Rony Horat, Head of the Inspection and Environmental Surveillance Education Department (DEISE), in charge of implementing the project, said that these activities will be implemented in 5 communes in the Department of Grand'Anse : Bonbon, Jeremiah, Apricot, Moron and Dame-Marie.

For his part, Roger Fankap FAO Representative in the department, welcomed this partnership. While congratulating the Ministry of the Environment on the development of the national plan of action to combat desertification, Fankap reminded that the actions of the project were in good agreement with those planned in this plan.

Jean Vilfort Beauvil, Representative of the Minister of the Environment welcomed this partnership which aims to fight against land degradation and improve the productivity situation of the fragile landscapes of the target communes. While inviting local authorities to support this very important aspect of the project, he reiterated the Ministry's commitment in the implementation of the ACD Project activities ie :

  • The development of an environmental education program focusing on desertification;
  • The preparation of didactic materials and environmental education textbooks that take into account the causes, consequences and measures to combat desertification;
  • The completion of a training of trainers for animators/trainers responsible for environmental education in the intervention communes;
  • Sensitization and training of the population of the five communes on the fight against desertification, sustainable land management and uncontrolled tree exploitation.
