Haiti - Economy : Inflation exceeds the forecasts of the BRH

For the month of September 2018, the General Consumer Price Index (base 100 in August 2004) amounted to 365.5 against 359.9 in August, once again showing a rise in inflation of + 1.5% in rhythm monthly, compared to 1.4% the previous month https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-25632-haiti-economy-inflation-passes-the-bar-of-14.html . Note that in the next report (October 2018 to be published in November), the Haitian Institute of Statistics and Informatics (IHSI) in ordert to take into account changes in household consumption has established a new base 100 (2017-2018) which will replace the current August 2004 base 100.

This monthly increase of + 1.5% is mainly the result of the behavior of consumption indices: "Food, drinks and tobacco" (+ 1.4%), "Clothing and fabrics, shoes" (+ 1.6%), "Health" (≠ 1.2 %) and "Leisure, Shows, Teaching and Culture" (+ 6.7%).

The upward change in the "Food, Beverages and Tobacco" index, which accounts for more than 50% of the household budget, comes from, among other things, the increase in rice prices (+ 2.2%), millet (+ 2.2%), maize ground meat (+ 1.2%), corn flakes (+ 1.9%), meat on average (+ 2.1%), chicken (+ 2.0%), fresh fish (+ 1.8%), herring on average (+ 1.6%), cheese ( + 2.1%), eggs (+ 1.9%), coconut (+ 1.9%), avocado (+ 1.4%), dry peas (+ 1.7%), eggplant (+ 1.5%), tomato (+ 1.6%), yams (+ 1.3%), malanga (+ 1.9%), potatoes (+ 1.5%), grapefruit (+ 1.2%), papaya (+ 2.1%), lemon (+ 1.7%) and sugar on average (+ 1.3%).

The rise in the "Apparel and Fabrics, Footwear" index comes from the variation in product prices such as: fabrics (+ 2.4%), suit (universal jacket) (+ 1.2%), shirt (+ 1.6%), -shirt (+ 1.7%), men's trousers (+ 1.8%), dress (+ 1.6%), women's t-shirt (+ 1.9%), clothing (+ 1.8%) and socks (+ 1.8%).

The increase in the "Health" index came after drugs (+ 1.8%), fees paid to doctors (+ 1.2%) and hospitalization costs (+ 1.1%).

Finally, the increase in the "Leisure, Entertainment, Education and Culture" index is mainly due to tuition fees (+ 10.8%) and the school bag (+ 1.3%).
