Haiti - Society : The fuel is more expensive... my dear...
Ronald Beaudin, Minister of Finance and Jocelyne Colimon Fethière, Minister of Commerce have announced yesterday series of increase in price of the petroleum products on the local market ranging from 2% to over 40% to take into account "partially" the rise in prices on the international market...

Gasoline 95 (octane index) increased from 196 gourds to 200 gourds (+2%), gasoline 91 increased from 172 gourds to 191 gourds (+11%). Diesel increased from 119 gourds to 162 gourds (+36%) and kerosene increased from 112 gourds to 161 gourds (+43 %)... Increases which arrive in an already difficult context, where the rise in prices of the food products already lets fear social disorders.

The Minister Beaudin explained that oil prices should be adjusted since March 2010, when petroleum products were started to increase. However, in order to relieve the population and allow haitian oil companies to bounce, the government refrained from raising prices until today. "It would have been irresponsible for the Government, to not make this increase" recalling that the subsidies granted to the oil products have cost 2.6 billion to the Haitian state in one year (fiscal 2010). The Minister said that it was an adjustment of median costs and that the gasoline 95 should in fact, be sold to 248 gourds, either 24% more...

The union of the Public Transport reacted strongly to these increases and asked the state to reverse its decision, recalling that the population, without work,
cannot cope with such increases. The Union is threatening the Government, of a stop in the public transport in the coming days, refusing to enter into this logic of increase the prices.
