Haiti - Politic : The IMED in favor of the fight against corruption and the PetroCaribe Trial

"By protesting on 18 November 2018 to demand justice in the PetroCaribe case, the Haitian youth is setting itself against the malfeasance and abuses of the authorities, which favored private gain for themselves and their relatives, without promoting the public interest" says the Mobile Institute of Democratic Education (IMED) who believes that "these demonstrations also have an anti-segregationist scope because they aim at the inclusion of all the layers of the population who defend their rights to know the truth on the management of public property".

IMED is in favor of this fight against corruption and impunity that has lasted for too long and continues. Because Haiti needs new policies, a new mechanism capable of destroying this system of public office abuses for private purposes in order to restore confidence in public institutions.

However, the Institute "deplores the loss of human life, the acts of violence that some perpetrated on behalf of the population and the abusive force that some police officers have used."

"[...] These are the bad practices, including embezzlement and fraud that the people denounce. Also, the population must remain vigilant and ensure that this fight is not politicized in favor of propagandists who want the nation to kill each other."

IMED points out that "these demonstrations are proof that the people have the power to change the destiny of Haiti and the PetroCaribe lawsuit they claim proves that it is aware that the fight against corruption is fundamentally about bad governance."

With all this, the IMED "invites the Government to materialize its promises to achieve a fair trial that must be the evidence of its commitment in the fight against an abusive exploitation system that benefits the most capable [...] IMED hopes that its anti-corruption initiatives will now encourage the authorities to prioritize budget transparency and accountability."
