Haiti - Economy : Inflation crosses the bar of 15%

According to the new Consumer Price Index (CPI base 100, 2017-2018 https://www.haitilibre.com/article-26268-haiti-economie-un-nouvel-indice-des-prix-a-la-consommation-plus-performant.html ), in December 2018 the index reached 111.2 against 109.6 the previous month, a monthly increase of +1.5% and inflation of 15.1% year-on-year (last 12 months).

This rise in inflation is due to the behavior of functions such as: Food and non-alcoholic beverages (+ 1.8% over one month and 17.7% over one year), clothing and footwear (+ 1.5% over one month and 16.3% over one year), Furniture, household goods and household maintenance (+ 2.1% over one month and 20.2% over one year), Health (+ 2.3% over one month and 23.9% over one year) and Leisure ( +1.4% in one month and 26.0% in one year).

Products that have seen the strongest year-on-year increases :

Food :

Imported rice 25.7%, fresh fish 20.1%, herring 21.3%, chadèque 25.9%, aubergine 31.2%, mirliton 25.1%, salt 33.1% and true tree 34.1%.

Furniture, household items...:

21.2% curtains, 31.2% refrigerator and 30.7% insecticide.

Health :

Drugs 29.4%, corrective eyewear 15.1% and hospitalization costs 14.9%.

The Year-on-Year Imported Products Index stands at 17.3% while the Local Products Price Index is at 14.3%.

At the regional level, the highest monthly inflation was observed in the cross-cutting regions (+ 1.8%) and the Metropolitan Area (+ 1.6%). While over the last 12 months, it is the departments of the North (+ 14.5%), Rest West and Transversal (+ 14.4%) which show the highest increases.

Finally, at the regional level, the monthly positive changes in the CPI are recorded in all the regions of the country for the month of December. However, the most significant variations are recorded at the regional level: Transversal (15.9%), North (15.6%) and South (15.5%).

Food and non-alcoholic beverages: month + 1.8%, year + 17.7%

Housing, water, gas, electricity and other fuels: months + 1.4%, year + 13.8%

Furniture, household goods and household maintenance: months + 2.1% year + 20.2%

Health: months + 2.3%, year + 23.9%

Transport: months + 0.7%, year + 5.4%

Communications: months + 0.5%, year + 3.5%

Leisure time: 1.4% month, year + 26.0%

Lessons: month 0.0%, year + 10.7%

Restaurants: month 1.2%, year + 15.3%

Miscellaneous goods and services: month 1.1%, year + 13.9%
