Haiti - Elections : The USA and Europe take note
United States :
The announcement by the Conseil Electoral Provisoire (CEP) of the preliminary results of the second round of the elections is another important milestone as the people of Haiti move forward to rebuild their country.

Election-day accounts by Haitian and international observers uniformly reported that, while there were cases of irregularities and fraud on March 20, these cases were isolated and reduced, especially when compared to the first round of voting.

The United States calls upon all political actors to resolve any outstanding questions of the electoral results through the contestation process. The Haitian people have shown great perseverance and patience throughout this process, and we hope that they continue to express themselves peacefully.

The United States stands by the people of Haiti in their efforts to rebuild their country and realize their vision of a more stable, democratic, and prosperous nation.

European Commission :
Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission, today made the following statement:

"I welcome the publication by the Provisional Electoral Council of the preliminary results of the second round of legislative and presidential elections in Haiti.

This is an important step in the country's current phase of democratic transition and should lead to greater political stability and to stronger governance in the interest of all the people of Haiti. Those are prerequisites for accelerating the process of reconstruction and economic recovery.

I encourage the people and the authorities of Haiti to go forward in the same spirit of calm and restraint that has characterised this second round of elections until the ongoing electoral process has been completed. The European Union will continue to support Haiti in its endeavours to promote democracy and the rule of law and further the process of reconstruction."
