Haiti - Elections : Displaying of BCED verdicts expected today

During the weekend, thirty hearings were held in 6 departments. In order to respect the electoral calendar, the judges of the Departmental Electoral Challenges Office (BCED), should proceed to the display of their decisions today Monday. In many departments the pleadings of the candidates have continued late into the night on Saturday.

In the West, Artibonite and Nippes, judges were in deliberation all day of Sunday. The respect of this delay is important, to ensure that the candidates who wish to challenge the decisions of BCED, can appeal the decision to the National Electoral Challenges Office (BCEN) and permit the publication of final results as scheduled on April 16. Results, which will then be published in the official newspaper "The Moniteur" on April 18 at the latest.

Philomé Pierre Noël, the President of the BED Ouest 1, hopes that the verdicts of the 5 cases of disputes will be displayed this Monday. Only 4 candidates of the ruling party INITE have challenged the preliminary results of the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP). In other departments of the country, the election tribunals have also and deliberate, for some, the verdicts are already displayed.

Domestic observers note a number of challenges, that they attribute to the successful holding of elections of March 20.
