Haiti - Environment : Creation of a Haitian Fund for Biodiversity

As part of the International Day of Biodiversity, development partners announce the creation of the Haitian Biodiversity Fund (FHB), a sustainable financing mechanism for the protection and enhancement of natural resources and ecosystems.

This mechanism will thus make it possible to finance, in the long term and permanently, the management of biodiversity at the country level by facilitating in a strategic and transparent way access to certain financial means to local partners both public and civil society.

"The sustainability of conservation and sustainable development actions is a major challenge for national stakeholders. This mechanism is an opportunity to enter a paradigm shift in terms of financial mobilization and the transparent use of resources for sustainable results," according to Dr. Jean Vilmond Hilaire who coordinated on behalf of the Audubon Society Haiti and technical and financial partners, the assembly of this institution.

An implementation Commission working on a common action plan was created in collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) to support the creation of this Fund.

The Audubon Haiti Society;

UN Environment,;

"The Nature Conservancy (TNC)";

The World Bank;

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB);

Swiss Cooperation;

German Cooperation;

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP);

The French Development Agency (AFD);

J/P Haitian Relief Organization (JP-HRO).

The FHB was set up according to eligibility criteria for the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund, which is a regional mechanism for sustainable financing of biodiversity. Financial support from Switzerland, UN Environment, Norway, the Global Environment Fund and USAID was needed for this.

"The launch of this fund marks a turning point in the management of the environment in general of biodiversity in Haiti. This is a great step forward for Haiti and for its people, but also a new paradigm advocating a financial instrument to ensure the sustainability of conservation funding through a reliable, transparent, and independent mechanism. Our brothers and sisters in Haiti can count on our full support for the full success of this new institution," said Maxène Atis of TNC.
