Haiti - Economy : The cooperatives in Haiti to fight against the economic crisis 15/07/2019 09:50:04 Serge Chéry, Director of the National Council of Cooperatives, stressed that the sector remained in place, despite the strong social unrest, political instability and the deterioration of the economic situation. "The goal of the co-operative sector is to help Haitians unite to get the country out of the economic recession that has been going on for too long," said a co-op official who has announced integration projects and studies on cooperative movements in national universities. Experts believe that the cooperative model tends to be more sustainable over time, that the gap between those in the highest and lowest positions is small and evenly distributed between urban and rural areas. Chéry, believes that greater stimulation of the sector and its diversification would enable a large number of young people to find a job and protect themselves from the unemployment that now affects nearly 70% of the population in Haiti. He also indicated that the Council intended to present the philosophy of cooperatives to the police force of the country explaining "Most police problems could be solved by cooperatives such as mass consumption, food, uniforms and certain equipment of base." Among the other projects of the National Commission of Cooperatives, it is also planned to guarantee young people a certain economic independence to eradicate poverty and to formulate training sessions and propose a bibliography.
