Haiti - FLASH : Corruption, at least 4 Haitian diplomats sanctioned in the Bahamas
Chancellor Bocchit Edmond said that so far in this corruption case, four Haitian diplomats and two mission employees have been subject to administrative measures.
Regarding visa traffic, the investigation confirms that some people have gone through diplomats to obtain visas. Regarding arranged marriages, the investigation identified a former Haitian diplomat stationed in Nassau involved in these marriages, a diplomat who was transferred to Curaçao in January 2019 and who was also recalled to Haiti.
With regard to the use of diplomatic franchises to import duty-free vehicles to private individuals, the investigation has not been able to confirm or refute these allegations.
Four diplomats including Chargé d'Affaires François Jérôme Michel and the head of consular affairs, Herns Mesamour (who had claimed his innocence https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-28362-haiti-social-arranged-marriages-involving-haitians-in-the-bahamas.html ) have already been recalled to Port-au-Prince and two employees of the consular mission have been transferred.
The Chancellery says that rigorous measures have been taken to improve the image of the Embassy of Haiti and regain the trust of the Haitian community and the authorities of the Bahamas. In the meantime, the former Minister Counselor at the Embassy of Haiti in the Bahamas Dorval Darlier has been appointed as new Chargé d'Affaires, pending the appointment of a new Ambassador.
