Haiti - FLASH : Corruption, at least 4 Haitian diplomats sanctioned in the Bahamas
The investigation conducted by the Haitian Chancellery at the beginning of August https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-28465-haiti-flash-mystery-around-the-investigation-on-corruption-at-the-embassy-of-haiti-in-the-bahamas.html following allegations of bribery of diplomatic staff and employees of the Embassy of Haiti in the Bahamas, particularly in arranging arranged marriages between Bahamians and Haitians to obtain the residence https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-28362-haiti-social-arranged-marriages-involving-haitians-in-the-bahamas.html ; on visa trading within the mission and the use of diplomats' deductibles, to the benefit of others to avoid paying customs duties, confirms several of the allegations of corruption published in "The Nassau Guardian" https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-28362-haiti-social-arranged-marriages-involving-haitians-in-the-bahamas.html and reveals active or passive involvement of diplomatic staff in acts of corruption contrary to the rules and ethics of the Mission, whose credibility in Nassau is now strongly compromised following this scandal...

Chancellor Bocchit Edmond said that so far in this corruption case, four Haitian diplomats and two mission employees have been subject to administrative measures.

Regarding visa traffic, the investigation confirms that some people have gone through diplomats to obtain visas. Regarding arranged marriages, the investigation identified a former Haitian diplomat stationed in Nassau involved in these marriages, a diplomat who was transferred to Curaçao in January 2019 and who was also recalled to Haiti.

With regard to the use of diplomatic franchises to import duty-free vehicles to private individuals, the investigation has not been able to confirm or refute these allegations.

Four diplomats including Chargé d'Affaires François Jérôme Michel and the head of consular affairs, Herns Mesamour (who had claimed his innocence https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-28362-haiti-social-arranged-marriages-involving-haitians-in-the-bahamas.html ) have already been recalled to Port-au-Prince and two employees of the consular mission have been transferred.

The Chancellery says that rigorous measures have been taken to improve the image of the Embassy of Haiti and regain the trust of the Haitian community and the authorities of the Bahamas. In the meantime, the former Minister Counselor at the Embassy of Haiti in the Bahamas Dorval Darlier has been appointed as new Chargé d'Affaires, pending the appointment of a new Ambassador.
