Haiti - Art : The artist Ivory Simone wants to present «Atlas and His Wife» to Michel Martelly

The Thai-born American artist, Ivory Simone, intends to present a bronze sculpture she made to Haitian President, Michel Martelly, as a gift to the Haitian People. Ivory Simon said she's already contacted Haitian officials in the United States asking for help to arrange an audience with President Martelly to present the sculpture to him.

The bronze entitled, "Atlas and His Wife", is a tribute to the resilience and fortitude of the Haitian people says the artist. This is an original work of art created with the help and guidance of British master sculptor, Gavin Fifield.

"The impetus for creating the piece was a desire to use art as a tool for social justice," said Ivory Simone. According to Simone, the sculpture, which depicts the Greek titan, Atlas, as an African man supporting his pregnant wife, Earth, in the throes of labor, is a symbol of the resilience and fortitude of the Haitian people. "This piece captures two immortal forces, male and female, bringing forth new life or hope through the terrible pain of labor. The Haitian people, too, are rebuilding their country in the midst of terrible adversity. Haitian men and women are laboring together to bring forth new life and hope to Haiti"

The American artist from Thailand Ivory Simone is the founder of OneWoman/OneHouse, a community organization that raises money to build a shelter for abused women and a home for the displaced in Haiti. A limited number of reproductions of "Atlas and His Wife" will also be sold to raise money for the OneWoman/OneHouse Haiti Project.

Note : The illustration shows the final version before the bronze.
