On the sidelines of an important economic meeting Hugo Rivera, the Dominican Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs in charge of Economic Affairs and International Cooperation announced that multilateral organizations including the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), as well as foreign governments have proposed to finance to the tune of a billion US dollars the development of bilateral projects in the border area between the Dominican Republic and Haiti

He pointed out that different projects will be carried out along the border in agriculture, tourism, industries and energy, which will have a positive impact on the living conditions of the people living on both sides of the border, adding it was also planned to set up an economic zone under a special regime to develop the border area based on the Laredo experiment (between the United States and Mexico).

He indicated that the Dominican Republic was in negotiation with Haiti so that these projects could be developed together, stressing that the problem resided in the social instability and the political changes in Haiti...

He explained that if the socio-political difficulties continued and delayed the conclusion of an agreement with Haiti on this important project of development of the border zone, the Dominican Republic envisaged to begin to realize the projects in the border part Dominican and in According to the evolution of the situation in Haiti, the neighboring country will be able to gradually integrate by carrying out projects on the Haitian border.
