Haiti - Education : Important meeting around the continuation of school activities

On Friday, November 15th, an important meeting was held between the main officials of the Ministry of National Education to harmonize the work initiated in Minister Cadet's office and the actions initiated by the Directorate General to prepare the Priority Action Plan for the continuation of school activities and post-crisis management.

From the outset, the Chief of Staff, Jackson Pléteau, made it clear the importance and the framework of the meeting to allow the Ministry to have a guidance document for the continuation of school activities in the affected areas. by the crisis.

Meniol Jeune, the Director General of the Ministry said to see a shared vision that takes up the concerns and initial objectives set by the Minister of Education Pierre Josué Agénor Cadet by launching the first work to prepare a response plan of the sector facing to the crisis affecting school activities.

Three main points were retained in the overall vision :

  • The reorganization of the 2019-2020 school calendar;

  • The development of the program with minimum skills to validate the school year for the basic and secondary schools taking into account a minimum of 120 to 140 days of work;

  • Psycho-social support to the educational community, targeting mainly students, especially in the most affected areas.

In addition, the provision of school kits and support for the school subsidy for children living in extreme poverty in difficult areas.

Two revised agenda proposals have been on the agenda, either in early December or early January for areas where school activities are affected, where the importance of an awareness campaign around the right to education and the return of schoolchildren and students to educational spaces.

Thus, the Directors of the technical departments most concerned, namely Marie Nadine Henry Directorate of Fundamental Education (DEF), and Maxime Mésilas Department of Secondary Education (DES) have exposed their provisional work to facilitate the adaptation of the calendar redeveloped by the Planning Directorate for non-functional schools since the beginning of the crisis, to validate the school year. According to them, the product will have to be available in less than two weeks.

Ralphson Pierre, Head of the Information and Communication Technology Unit in Education (UTICE) also shared his preparations, with the support of the Information System Unit, to assist technical teaching departments by providing digital educational resources, through a platform under construction.

Note that the Technical and Financial Partners are considering contributing to the Priority Action Plan for the Education Sector. A working meeting is planned in this direction with the Ministry during this week on the planned actions and possible financial support.
