Haiti - Weather : Serious floods in the North and in the Nippes (provisional report)

The Departmental Technical Coordination of the North and the Nippes of the Civil Protection inform us that the torrential rains which fell during the weekend of December 6 to 8 caused serious floods in their respective department, in particular in the communes of : Cap-Haïtien, Limonade, Quartier-Morin, Grande-Rivière du Nord, Bahon, Acul-du-Nord, Plaine-du-Nord, Port-Magot, Borgne, Limbé and Baradères.

Part of the barrière bouteille sub-commissariat collapsed following a landslide at the Labory Moose. Floods noted at the localities located on the bed of the Haut-du-Cap River (Blue-Hills, Bas Zo Vincent, Champin, Cité du peuple, and Shadda) causing losses to homes, filth and alluvium obstruct certain streets of Downtown.

A young man in his twenties was swept away by the raging waters, his body was found;

Limonade :

In the communal section of Basse Plaine, specific to Bord-de-Mer, several localities are flooded but the population is out of danger at the moment;

Grande-rivière du Nord, Bahon, Acul-du-Nord, Plaine-du-Nord, Limbé et Port-Magot, Quartier-Morin, Clerisse et Baudin :

Several hundred families are stricken.

Baradères :

A flash flood caused a flood of the town, particularly affecting:

  • La Rue Désaubert

The first provisional assessment amounts to 315 affected families.

The two coordinations continue with the surveillance and keep the permanent contact with the Direction of the Civil Protection (DPC) which reiterates its commitment to accompany the population. The DPC once again reminds people in areas at risk of floods, landslides to remain vigilant and adhere to the usual safety guidelines in case of heavy rain and gusts of wind.
