Haiti - 216th independence : Reflections and wishes of former Consul Lesly Condé
At the start of this new year, the former Consul General of Haiti in Chicago Lesly Condé (2004-2018) shares his thoughts and wishes with all Haitians and the diaspora, a message that we invite you to discover.

"Compatriots and friends from all over,

As a year bows out to make way for new challenges, new hopes and renewed optimism, I appreciate the great privilege of expressing my sincere wishes for health, success and happiness.

The year 2020 has arrived with its procession of promises, wishes and ardent desires. There is also this generous supply of optimism that helps us transform our unfinished projects of 2019 into new things that receive special attention. I urge you to tirelessly pursue your dreams, while keeping a place in your heart for the love of neighbor.

For us Haitians, New Year's Day is a doubly important date since it brings back the anniversary of the creation of Haiti, the first black state in the New World. On this first day of January 2020, we proudly celebrate the 216th anniversary of this tiny nation that showed the world the path to freedom. Our ancestors wrote one of the most beautiful pages in the history of humanity by carrying very high the torch which they bequeathed to us, and which it is our responsibility to protect. For this reason, January 2 which we observe as Ancestors Day, should be observed everywhere in the world where freedom, justice and human rights are considered as essential ideals. Our ancestors deserve to be known to all the children of the world for having given a decisive victory to the cause of respect for humans by defeating the slave-holding armed forces of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Haiti is experiencing an unenviable situation today. Hopefully the year 2020 will bring us the wisdom we need to solve our own problems instead of submitting to imposed pseudo-solutions.

At the beginning of each year, while our Nation, always resilient, gives itself new reasons to hope and to fight, it is also the time to think about this catastrophe with apocalyptic dimensions that fell on us on January 12, 2010 This massive earthquake struck mercilessly and without warning, leaving almost half a million dead, and countless horror stories that cannot all be told. This year, commemorating the tenth anniversary of this destructive earthquake, let us have a special thought for those compatriots who still exist, after their lives were destroyed. We will always remember the admirable surges of solidarity that the world proved capable of all kinds are still alive today. Even today, Haiti struggles desperately to cling to its humanity.

It only remains for me to thank you for having given me your attention during this holiday season. I cannot urge you enough to love your neighbor. Wherever you are, whatever you do, think of Haiti."
