Tuesday at the National Palace, President Jovenel Moïse, received an audience with Luis Leonardo Almagro, Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-29703-haiti-politic-visit-of-the-secretary-general-of-the-oas.html came to inquire about the situation in Haiti and bring the support of the OAS, of which Haiti is one of the founding members, and to encourage the Haitian actors to favor the dialogue for meet the aspirations of the Haitian people.

During this meeting the two men discussed the political situation in Haiti and its consequences, in particular its humanitarian, economic and social aspects. Moïse insisted on his determination to continue his efforts to form a Government of national unity and to negotiate an inclusive formula that will allow Haiti to find a final solution to the structural crisis which is shaking the country.

During a joint press briefing organized after the meeting Almagro stressed the OAS's intention to accompany Haitian actors in their quest for an inclusive political agreement to form a Government of national unity; the need for constitutional reform; the continuation of the program to strengthen national anti-corruption institutions stressing "We have agreed with the President to strengthen the fight against corruption in Haiti [...] The fight against corruption will make the government more credible and will better meet the needs of the population" ; intercede with Haiti's bilateral and multilateral partners, including the Bretton Woods institutions, to disburse the expanded $229 million facility negotiated with the IMF last year, as well as to respond to humanitarian challenges that have been compounded by the sustained socio-political crisis, while pursuing cooperation in support of the national development policy, which remains essential to attract direct investment, create wealth and jobs, and promote stability and social peace.

On the other hand Almagro, remained silent on the anti-government movements which paralyzed the country for several months, on insecurity, on the multi-dimensional crisis which affects millions of Haitians and on the Haitian Parliament which will be dysfunctional from 13 January 2020...

In addition, Moïse informed Secretary Almagro of his wish, during his acting presidency of the Permanent Council of the OAS, from April 1 to June 30, to focus on three important themes : Strengthening political dialogue between countries members ; improving the regional approach to adaptation, mitigation and resilience to climate change and promoting regional cooperation in access to clean energy sources.
