Haiti - Education : A Chair in Gender at the University Quisqueya
The University of West Indies (UWI), the University Quisqueya (UniQ), feminists Haitian and UN WOMEN, the UN entity for gender equality and the empowerment of women, have held last week, in Port-au-Prince, a two-day workshop, aimed at introducing a chair in "gender" to the university from summer 2011.

During these two days, five researchers from the Institute for Gender and Development Studies (IGDS), of the UWI, have exchanged with leaders of the movement of Haitian women and experts on gender, to develop the curriculum of the formation and the modalities for the establishment of this course within the University.

The delegation also met the Secretary General of the rector of the UniQ who did not hide her interest so that, from summer 2011, the UniQ can offer the first courses, as part of a regional partnership with the UWI, financially supported by UN WOMEN.

For Kathy Mangones, representative of UN women in Haiti, this initiative is an opportunity to transmit the knowledge about women's struggles for the equality and encourage the emergence of a new generation of feminists. "When the regional office has proposed us this project, it is with enthusiasm that we have facilitated the partnership between these two academic institutions and solicited the participation of Haitian feminists who cherish for a long time the dream to include gender in the Haitian University. We hope to benefit from the experience of IDGS during the initial phase and thus to lay the foundations of a longer term cooperation", she added.

This formation, which will be sanctioned by a University certificate, will be open to the leaders of civil society organizations seeking to acquire or build knowledge on gender analysis, the methodological tools and the inclusion of gender in their actions; to the government and public service employees, to the students of first and second University cycle interested to the gender studies or aiming an academic certificate, and to the employees of the United Nations system interested in deepening their capacities in gender analysis and consideration of the gender.

The formation offer will be based on the practices, the knowledge and experiences of civil society and women's rights organizations, while taking into account of the weaknesses at the academic level in this area.
