In a letter to Steve Linick, the State Department's Inspector General, Democratic Senators Bob Menéndez (New Jersey) and Joaquin Castro (Texas) asked that an investigation be opened into suspicions of electoral considerations, brought in by politicians appointed to the State Department by President Donald Trump, which led to the decision to end the Statute of Temporary Protection (TPS) for citizens of El Salvador, Haiti and Honduras.

Recall that to comply with preliminary injunctions of several courts, the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had published in the federal registry, the extension of the validity of the TPS until 4 January 2021 for beneficiaries from El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua and Sudan.
