Haiti - Politic : Incidents of Champ-de-Mars, declaration of the Prime Minister a.i. Lapin
Following the violent events that occurred during the police demonstration on February 17, in Pétion-ville and on the Champ-de-Mars, Prime Minister ai Jean Michel Lapin declared Tuesday on behalf of the Superior Council of the National Police (CSPN) of which he is the President "[...] The Government of the Republic observed with dismay that the police officer claiming to be from a self-proclaimed union, accompanied by hooded individuals, on the sidelines of their demands, on Monday 17 February 2020, attacked the Directorate General of the National Police of Haiti, then set fire to the stands erected https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-30051-haiti-flash-police-protesters-set-fire-to-champ-de-mars.html in the Champ-de-Mars area in preparation for the carnival.

These barbaric acts, illegal, unacceptable and unworthy of a police officer, are a reminder of the indiscriminate violence of extremists and terrorists who hide behind demands, to sow disorder and chaos. They let glimpse the expert hands of the enemies of freedom and democracy who take advantage of the slightest opportunities and failures to attack the Institutions of the Republic.

The Government strongly condemns such acts and stresses that the authors, co-authors and accomplices must take responsibility for responding to them, both administratively and judicially.

The Government takes this opportunity to inform the general population that it has taken note of the demands of the police officers who rightly demand better treatment in relation to their status and their service. The Government, through the body of the Prime Minister, President of the CSPN, had already announced administrative arrangements to assess these claims. On the occasion, he had called the police to serenity, patience and foresight during these difficult times in the country [...]

The Government asked the valiant police officers, legitimate guardians of public order, to act calmly in all circumstances, respecting the discipline and the regulations that characterize the police force. The police demands must adopt a behavior worthy and respectful of the legal and regulatory provisions of the Republic."
