This Wednesday at 5:19 am and 5 seconds in the morning, a light earthquake of magnitude 3.0 on the Richter scale occurred near Belladère (Dept. Center), near the Haitian-Dominican border. The epicenter was located 3 km east of Belladère at a depth of 23.1km.

In addition, in the balance sheet of seismic activity for the month of February 2020 of the Bureau of Mines and Energy based on the events recorded by the national and regional seismological networks, reveals an increase of 75% in the number of seismas compared to until January 2020

Main figures to retain :

• 42 earthquakes of magnitudes between 1.3 and 3.4 were recorded throughout the national territory during the month of February 2020.

• Compared to January 2020 (24 earthquakes), the number of earthquakes increased by 75% in February 2020 (42 earthquakes).

• The 3 geographic departments most requested by the minor earthquakes in February are:

  - The North West with 16 out of 42 earthquakes (38%);

  - The Southeast with 12 out of 42 earthquakes (28.5%);

  - The West with 7 out of 42 earthquakes (16.7%).

• 28 out of 42 earthquakes (66.5%) were recorded in the North-West and the South-East.

• 47.6% of the earthquakes, or 20 out of 42, occurred at sea, which poses a risk of tsunami when the conditions are met, which was not the case;

• The earthquakes in February occurred at depths varying between 1 and 52 km, therefore mostly shallow earthquakes;

• 97 earthquakes were recorded in February 2020 on the whole island, 42 in Haiti (43.3%) and 55 (56.7%) in the Dominican Republic.
