Haiti - Insecurity : Sunday, incident at the Toussaint Louverture International Airport

Sunday afternoon at the Toussaint Louverture International Airport, Customs officers were conducting routine checks of luggage of several passengers from Miami. According to witnesses, persons controlled, which could be military personnel. It's at the time where the customs officers found that passengers were carrying taxable objects, that a group of armed soldiers of the UN Mission for Stabilization in Haiti (Minustah) broke into the airport, to stop the verification work of customs officers, take the luggage and leave with their "colleagues" before returning to their armored vehicle. Once outside, the soldiers fired shots into the air before leaving.

According to an airport employee, these products were not products imported by the Minustah and which enjoys diplomatic status and exemptions, but rather a private imports of these passenger...

The people in the airport still in shock, wondering what would happen if the customs officers had resisted before these menacing and heavily armed military personnel. All wondered on what these "supposed military personnel" had in their luggage...

Although the course of events is still unclear and that the reasons for this "surprising " intervention is not yet known, this type of incident can only serve to tarnish the image of the Minustah, already difficulty tolerated by our compatriots...
