Haiti - Economy : Signature of a memorandum of understanding between the State and the private sector

Tuesday Prime Minister Joseph Jouthe, accompanied by Ministers Patrick Boisvert (Economy), Jonas Coffy (Trade) and Jean Baden Dubois Governor of the Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH), signed a memorandum of understanding with the Presidents of the main Chambers of Commerce : Bernard Craan, Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Haiti (CCIH), Laurent Saint-Cyr, American Chamber of Commerce in Haiti (AmCham Haiti), Geoffrey Handal, Franco-Haitian Chamber of Commerce and industry (CFHCI), Claudel Dumas, Haitian-Canadian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIHC) and Wilhelm Lemke, President of the Association des industries d'Haiti (ADIH).

According to Prime Minister Jouthe, this memorandum of understanding, the result of a dialogue initiated since September 4 between the Haitian State and representatives of the private business sector, will make it possible to act in the short term on a simple variable which is the currency of transactions on the national market. This will help control inflation and stabilize the exchange rate.

Through this memorandum, the signatory representatives of the private sector, after having carefully analyzed each recital before giving their approval, all made a solemn commitment to require commercial companies and industries operating in the national territory to denote their transactions and display the prices of goods and services in Gourdes.

One of the main objectives pursued by the measures and provisions provided for in this memorandum is to make the US dollar available for international transactions where there are no other alternatives.

In his speeches, the Head of Government announced a set of actions and initiatives aimed at revitalizing national production. To achieve this, a recovery plan for the post-covid economy is being finalized with an emphasis on support mechanisms for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.
