Haiti - Politic : The Hydro Meteorological Unit could become an autonomous body
The Hydro Meteorological Unit (HUM) of Haiti organized an inter-institutional workshop on the services offered by the institution which allowed those in charge to present the history of the institution, to take stock of certain projects and to announce the imminent presentation of a National Strategic Plan for the reinforcement of the UHM, which, according to the persons in charge should allow the UHM to pass from a simple Technical Directorate to an autonomous body.

The HYDROMET project for which the World Bank made an envelope of 5 million dollars available to the UHM over 5 years in order to strengthen its capacity, especially in the area of institutional strengthening of hydrometeorological services, is coming to an end. This project helped, among other things, to strengthen the institution’s hydrometeorological systems.

Branly Eugène, General Director of the Ministry of Agriculture, who opened the workshop, believes that it is time for this institution to be strengthened at several levels, starting with the development and implementation of a strategic plan taking into account the various aspects relating to weather, hydro and climate. He urged officials to do everything in their power to submit the 2021-2025 national strategic plan for the strengthening of the UHM by December 2020. A plan that is part of the continuity of activities financed by the World Bank, the United Nations World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Canadian Government.

"The implementation of this plan should allow the UHM to strengthen its transition from Technical Directorate to an autonomous body under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture," concluded Branly Eugène.
