Haiti - Agriculture : Success of the 1st Phase of the «Resilient Productive Territories» Project
The Resilient Productive Territories Project (TPR) financed by the World Bank and launched by the Ministry of Agriculture, in concert with the Ministry of the Environment, last March when the first cases of Covid-19 appeared in Haiti to reduce the risks of worsening food insecurity, successfully completed the first phase of emergency operations in Paillant, Petite Rivière des Nippes and Anse-à-Veau, ensuring food availability in the affected localities at 3,700 beneficiary farmers.

"At Paillant 80,000 yam cuttings, 10,000 bags of compost and 20 tons of peas were distributed. In Petite Rivière des Nippes and Anse-à-Veau, there are 400,000 banana suckers distributed within the framework of this project and a significant quantity of corn seeds, wild peas and unknown peas have been distributed," indicated the agronomist Bernard Edmond, local coordinator of the TPR. There were also cuttings of potatoes, cassava and seedlings of fruit trees (avocado, mango and coconut) and forest (acacia, moringa, cedar) distributed as part of the first phase of the TPR, carried out during the spring agricultural campaign in order to stop the degradation of the watersheds.

In Paillant, some yam producers living in the commune of Salagnac are already starting to savor the fruits of their labor. The harvest promises to be interesting for them.

In Baconnois, a municipal section of the commune of Anse-à-Veau, the diversity of crops grown in the plots gives beneficiaries the advantage of having several harvest seasons. In the localities of Béguin, Nan Chouchou, Garraud and Cahuc, there are plots cultivated with peas, bananas, yams, potatoes, etc...

In terms of prospects, the TPR project aims to support more than 7,000 farmers during the next agricultural season. The Project is divided into two Phases, the first consists of an emergency phase which lasts for one year and the second is a regular phase which will continue over a period of four years.
