Haiti - Minustah : Mariano Fernández takes office next week
The new Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations in Haiti and head of the Minustah, Mr. Mariano Fernández, of Chile, which replaces Edmond Mulet, should be installed in his new function next week after having met the authorities and representatives of the institutions of Haiti.

Mr. Fernández brings to this position nearly of forty years of diplomatic experience of very high level within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile, including to the position of Minister from 2009 to 2010. Mr. Fernández was previously Ambassador of Chile to the United States from 2006 to 2009, in the UK from 2002 to 2006, in Spain from 2000 to 2002, in Italy from 1992 to 1994 and to the Mission of Chile to the EU between 1990 and 1992. From 1994 to 2000, Mr. Fernández was Deputy Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Chile. From 2003 to 2007, he also served as Commissioner of Chile to the International Whaling Commission. Between 1974 and 1982, during the military dictatorship in Chile, Mr. Fernández lived in exile in Germany where he worked as a copy editor for the magazine Development and Cooperation, the press agency IPS Dritte Welt Nachrichten and the Handbook of Development Assistance. Back in Chile, Mr. Fernandez worked as a researcher and member of the Executive Committee of the Center of Studies for Development (CED), from 1982 to 1990. Mr. Fernández graduated in law from the Catholic University of Santiago in Chile Catholic University in Santiago, Chile, and social science research methods at the University of Bonn, in Germany. Born in 1945 in Santiago, Mr. Fernández is married and father of three children.
