Haiti - New Constitution : A project will be ready first week of January 2021
At the beginning of the week at the Kinam Hotel took place the presentation by the "Independent Advisory Committee for the development of the draft of the new Constitution" of the balance of its various achievements since its creation on October 28, 2020.
This committee's mission is to consult widely with experts and all sectors of public life before drawing up a preliminary draft Constitution which will be submitted to civil society organizations which will be able to issue all the recommendations they deem necessary, before the drafting of a final draft which will be submitted to the people in a referendum scheduled for the first half of 2021.
The Committee intends to continue the reflection with all the forces of Haitian society and to build a compromise around the main axes of organization of civil and political life that the constitution includes.
This consultation will be carried out with all the vital forces of the nation with a view to reaching a major compromise on points related in particular to the political regime, administrative governance, the exercise of fundamental rights, sovereignty and citizenship.
In its phase 2 in relation to its action plan, the committee intends from January 4 to February 26, 2021 : submit a preliminary draft for consultation of the new constitution to institutional sectors and civil society organizations (January 4 to 8), then it should be handed over to President Jovenel Moïse on February 26, 2021. The constitutional referendum is scheduled for March.
