Haiti - Economy : Inflation 19.2%, prices go up... (December 2020)

After the disinflations recorded during the months of September and October 2020, a certain rise in prices was observed during the months of November and December. The General Consumer Price Index (CPI base 100, 2017-2018 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-26268-haiti-economy-a-new-index-of-consumer-prices-more-efficient.html ) which had experienced negative monthly inflation of -1.2% in October and a decrease in annualized inflation of 3.6%, increased in November (+ 0.5%) and December (+ 1.0%). On the other hand, inflation maintains its downward trend at an annual rate : 20.1% in November and 19.2% in December, against 25.1% September and 21.6% in October respectively.

The monthly increase observed in December is the result of the behavior of the consumption indices :

“Food products and non-alcoholic drinks”: (+ 1.4% over one month and 23.1% over one year);

“Housing, water, gas, electricity and other fuels” (+ 0.7% over one month and 15.0% over one year);

“Furniture, household items and routine household maintenance” (+ 1.0% over one month and 17.0% over one year); S

“Health” (+ 2.0% over one month and 31.9% over one year); E

“Education” (+ 0.6% over one month and 12.6% over one year).

The products that recorded the most pronounced annual inflation are:

Food :

Local rice (18.3%), imported rice (15.7%), pasta (26.3%), fresh fish (30.6%), edible oil (22.8%), banana (37.8%), peas on average (35.1%).

Housing, water, gas, electricity and other fuels :

Housing rent (17.6%), charcoal (19.9%) and propane gas (21.5%).

Furniture, household items and routine household maintenance :

Living room furniture (23.4%), dining room (23.4%), bed (26.9%), mattress 20.6%) and laundry soap (18.6%).

Health :

Drugs (36.0%), glasses with corrective lenses (30.2%), doctors' fees (30.7%) and hospital costs (34.5%)

Communications : Cell phone (15.6%).

Education : Tuition fees (12.9%).

It should be noted that the Consumer Price Index for local products has varied by 19.1% at a manual rate, against 19.3% for imported products.

Housing, water, gas, electricity and other fuels: month + 0.7%, year + 15%

Furniture, household items and routine household maintenance: month + 1.0%, year + 17.0%

Health: month + 2%, year + 31.9%

Transport: month + 0.3%, year + 7.2%

Communications: month + 0.1%, year + 4.1%

Leisure: month + 0.4%, year + 12.6%

Education: year + 0.6% year + 12.6%

Restaurants: month + 0.3%, year + 22.0%

Miscellaneous goods and services: month + 0.1%, year + 15.9%

IPC Global : December 2019 20.8%; January 2020 20.7%; February 20.8%; March 22.0%; April 22.4%; May 23.3%; June 24.7%; July 25.7%; August 27.8%; September 25.1%; October 21.6%; November 20.1%; December 19.2%

CPI for Local Products : December 2019 20.4%; January 2020 20.3%; February 20.4%; March 21.5%; April 21.5%; May 22.5%; June 23.9%; July 24.9%; August 26.5%; September 24.3%; October 21.7%; November 20.1%; December 19.1%

CPI of Imported Products : December 2019 21.5%; January 2020 21.5%; February 21.6%; March 23.0%; April 24.0%; May 24.8%; June 26.2%; July 27.1%; August 30.1%; September 26.6%; October 21.4%; November 20.0%; December 19.3%

CPI by geographic region (October 2020) :

In the regions, increases in the CPI are observed in all geographic regions of the country. However, the most significant variations are recorded in the regions: AireMétropolitaine (19.6%), Reste-Ouest (19.1%) and North (19.4%).

Metropolitan area: month + 0.9%, year + 19.6%

(Port-au-Prince, Delmas, Pétion-ville, Carrefour and Croix des Bouquet);

Rest West: month + 1.0%, year + 19.1%

(Departments of the Southeast and the West without the metropolitan area);

North: month + 1.2%, year + 18.4%

(Department of North, North East and North West);

South: month + 0.9%, year + 18.4%

(Department of South, Grande-Anse and Nippes);

Transversal: month + 1.0%, year + 18.9%

(Department of Center and Artibonite).
