Haiti - DR : 300 illegal Haitians and 7 smugglers arrested in Elías Piña

Agents from the Directorate General of Migration (DGM), accompanied by members of the Specialized Corps for Land Border Security (CESFRONT) arrested during a migration control operation, at a bus terminus in Elías Piña 300 Haitians (220 men, 60 women and 20 children) without papers as well as 7 migrant smugglers in possession of a large sum of money.

All Haitians in an irregular migratory situation have been transferred to the reception center installed in this province, from where they will be returned to Haiti and the vehicles in which they were transported were seized.

Seven people are under arrest for migrant smuggling identified as being : Nicolás Dupervir, Wilner Agustín, Ernest Antonio, Jacky, Soul Mathurin, Elner and Fauguel Sena. In addition, a large amount of money in dollars ($450) in Haitian gourdes (299,410 Gourde) and in pesos (219,550 pesos) as well as alcoholic beverages in their possession were seized.

Enrique García, the Director General of Migration warns that anyone who traffics illegal aliens (mostly Haitians) whoever gives them shelter or a job will be punished with all the rigor of the law. In addition, all vehicles checked with a person in an irregular migratory situation on board will be seized.
