Haiti - Politic : Death of former Senator Serge Gilles
Pradel Henriquez, the Minister of Culture salutes the departure of Serge Gilles (85), politician, former Senator and former presidential candidate, who died on the evening of February 1st, 2021, at the Canapé-Vert hospital (Port -au-Prince).

"Minister Henriquez, while offering his condolences to his family, to his relatives, to his combat comrades, to his party, pays tribute to the man of conviction that was Serge Gilles.

Born in Maïssade, in the Central Plateau, on January 5, 1936, Serge Gilles, brilliant intellectual, had a license from the Sorbonne in psychology, a diploma in International Relations from the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris, a diploma in Physical Education the National School of Physical Education (ENSEP).

Engaged very early in a fight against the Duvaliers, he experienced a 25-year exile. Upon his return to Haiti in 1986, he founded the Social Democratic Party, Haitian Revolutionary Progressive Nationalist Party (PANPRA) before being arrested and tortured under military rule.

In 1990, he was elected Senator following the alliance of his Party with the Movement for the Establishment of Democracy (MIDH).

In 2005, PANPRA joined with other left-wing parties to form the Fusion of Haitian Social Democrats. Under the banner of the Fusion, he will run for the presidential elections of 2005-2006, which will preferably consecrate the victory of René Préval.

Alongside Chavanne Jean Baptiste of the Mouvement des Paysans de Papaye (MPP), Brother Francklin Armand of the Congregation of the Little Brothers and the Little Sisters of the Incarnation, Serge Gilles was considered for a long time as the reference for the entire Central Plateau.
