Haiti - Elections : The Dominican Government deeply concerned...
Wednesday April 7 Roberto Álvarez, the Dominican Minister of Foreign Affairs, during the reading of a report on the position of the Dominican Republic on the situation in Haiti and its current climate of tension, reiterated the "deep concern" of the Dominican Government faced with the political instability and violence that Haiti is experiencing, and the "difficulties" it foresees for the electoral calendar proposed by the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) to be carried out this year.

Recall that President Moïse hopes to organize a referendum on June 27 (initially scheduled for April 25 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-33094-haiti-flash-the-referendum-postponed-by-2-months-official.html ) to approve a new Constitution and in September to organize legislative and presidential elections while Haiti is going through a period of open confrontation between the power in place and the radical opposition, in addition to a situation of insecurity, war between armed gangs and an increase in kidnappings, especially in Port-au-Prince.

Álvarez underlined that for the Dominican Government, the difficulty for the Haitian authorities to comply with the electoral agenda "[...] stems from two fundamental elements :

Firstly, the lack of dialogue between the main political actors called upon to participate in the various electoral processes.

Secondly, the great slowness with which the registration and identification of voters is carried out. Adding "To date, all estimates indicate that the goal of completing voter registration before the election will not be met."

In this sense, the Dominican Government "reiterates its commitment to support the process of inclusion for the elections in Haiti of all Haitian citizens who are on Dominican territory," affirmed the Dominican Chancellor.
