Haiti - Politic : «the Haitianization of Guadeloupe» words that indignant...

The controversial remarks of Edouard Delta, the mayor of the Municipality of Anse-Bertrand (in the far north of Grande Terre) who, during a televised intervention, to qualify the degradation of social dialogue and the misdeeds committed by striking agents of the town hall had declared "[....] These acts are reprehensible, because one notes everywhere in Guadeloupe, that there is a kind of... the term which I am going to use, which is not pejorative, but which is still significant... that there is a kind of Haitianization that is taking place in Guadeloupe, more and more. That is to say that the law is not respected [...]" have made the community and the Haitian authorities of Guadeloupe react strongly.

The Consulate General of Haiti in Pointe-à-Pitre learned with great indignation the words of Mayor Edouard Delta, estimating "[...] These stereotypical statements tend to stigmatize the Haitian community which lives peacefully in the Antilles. These regrettable remarks are elementary shortcuts which convey discriminatory clichés and are likely to incite anti-foreign behavior in the Antilles [...]"

Following this declaration, the Haitians and friends of Haiti in Guadeloupe issued a press release denouncing the mayor's remarks, which they consider as "an act of discrimination [...] deemed defamatory" affirming "[...] By his words, the Mayor of Anse Bertrand urges his constituents, even the entire population of Guadeloupe to reject members of the Haitian Community" demanding that the mayor apologize to the Haitian people, particularly to the Haitian community of Guadeloupe.

If the mayor Edouard Delta regrets that his words could have shocked, he does not intend to go back on what he said. He emphasizes that he did not invent the word "Haitianization", which derives from the verb "Haitianiser" and which was taken out of its context according to him, whereas he only wanted to draw a parallel with the events in Guadeloupe and the socio-political events in Haiti.
