Haiti - FLASH : Kidnapping of one of the rare orthopedic surgeons in Haiti

The kidnapping on Wednesday August 18, 2021 of Doctor Workens Alexandre, by unidentified individuals when he was going to the Bernard Mevs hospital, threatens the efforts to respond to the earthquake of August 14 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34525-haiti-flash-the-toll-is-growing-nearly-15-000-victims-partial-assessment.html

Note that Dr. Workens Alexandre is one of the few orthopedic surgeons in Haiti and that his work is essential for the victims of the earthquake.

An official at Bernard Mevs Hospital said 45 of the 48 earthquake victims currently being treated at that hospital needed orthopedic surgery.

On Thursday, 24 hours after the kidnapping, the Bernard Mevs Hospital reacted strongly in a note:

Note from Bernard Mevs Hospital :

"Tired of deploring the incessant kidnapping of our colleagues from the Bernard Mevs hospital, we rise up against this untenable situation which continues to plague our society and impoverish Haitian families.

Today 24 hours after the kidnapping of our brother, friend and colleague Dr Alexandre Workens, our ortho and trauma team has had a limb amputated. This paralyzes the care that we had started to give to the multiple victims of the earthquake that we have been welcoming since Saturday, August 14.

Give us Dr Alexandre unconditionally so that he can continue to help all those in need."
