Haiti - Health : CECI, Rara and Cholera...

The Centre for International Studies and Cooperation (CECI) has mobilized 16 rara bands to promote messages of awareness and hygiene precautions against cholera. This innovative approach allowed us to reach 23,590 people in the Artibonite department, which is considered to be the source of the disease.

This strategy is part of a larger awareness campaign against cholera called "Mèt kò veye kò" (Stay alert). Implemented between January and June 2011, the whole project increased the awareness of more than 170,000 people and was funded by USAID to the amount of $400,000. This project included not only the mobilization of rara bands, but also the training of anti-cholera teams, the promotion of good hygiene practices in the 40 communal sections of Upper Artibonite, the education of 50,000 heads of household and the participation of the project's nursing personnel, the mobilizing agents and anti-cholera teams.

The project covered 7 communes of Upper Artibonite: Anse-Rouge, Terre-Neuve, Gros-Morne, Saint-Michel de l'Attalaye, Gonaïves, Ennery and Marmelade.
