Haiti - COVID-19 : PAHO considers «totally unacceptable» the low vaccination rate in Haiti

Despite the deployment of 68 centers, vaccination in Haiti is progressing very slowly. On Wednesday, September 16, Dr Carissa Etienne, Head of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) of the Americas region office called on the Haitian authorities and partners to step up vaccination efforts against Covid-19 stressing that "The increase in vaccination is important to protect the country from the transmission of COVID-19" while the Ministry of Health has just confirmed the presence of the highly contagious Delta variant in Haiti https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-34765-icihaiti-covid-19-the-delta-variant-detected-in-haiti.html

To date, the Haitian government has managed to fully immunize (2 doses) only 14,382* people out of over 11 million inhabitants.

"So far, Haiti has injected a total of 50,283 * dose of vaccine but many more people need to be vaccinated,” Étienne insisted, adding that "less than 1% of the population covered with 500,000 doses of vaccine available is totally unacceptable."

Dr Lauré Adrien, Director General of the Ministry of Health, recognizes that the vaccination rate is low. Explaining that Haiti was in the process of strengthening its vaccination program in the rural peripheries when a major earthquake struck the southern peninsula (Dept. South, Grand'Anse and Nippes) stressing "Already, the population was not very receptive to vaccination, which now makes the task even more difficult" https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34237-haiti-covid-500-000-vaccines-in-haiti-75-of-haitians-do-not-want-to-be-vaccinated.html adding "So far, the mobile units are working [...] the objective is to extend it to other departments [...] The ministry has new plans awareness campaign for the vaccination campaign because we believe that we must reach the population."
