Haiti - Politic : The Mixed Bilateral Commission will resume its talks between the DR and Haiti 22/11/2021 09:46:53
Saturday, November 20, 2021, following the recent official visit to the Dominican Republic by Daniel Supplice, Prime Minister's special envoy Ariel Henry https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-35255-haiti-diplomacy-end-of-mission-of-special-envoy-daniel-supplice-in-dominican-rep.html the Director of Governmental Strategy and Communication Homero Figueroa, took stock of this visit and declared "For the continuation of intergovernmental talks, the Mixed Bilateral Commission (CMB) has been confirmed as the appropriate institutional space, it is therefore expected that the work of the CMB, which operates under the direction of the foreign ministries of the two countries, will resume shortly" adding that Daniel Supplice will now be the direct interlocutor to discuss all issues of common interest and advance the dialogue on issues on the binational agenda. Note that on this last point, the Haitian Government has not yet confirmed the possible role of Daniel Supplice within the framework of the CMB, which the Dominicans seem to attribute to him.
These decisions were communicated to the President, Luis Abinader, and to the Minister of Foreign Relations, Roberto Álvarez who informed Supplice that he wished "[...] that diplomatic relations be maintained on the basis of good neighborliness and mutual respect."
It should be noted that Daniel Supplice's visit took place in particular within the framework of the implementation of a series of measures aimed at curbing immigration from Haiti, due to the instability and the high level of violence. The most controversial measures were the expulsion by the Dominican Government of many Haitian pregnant women in an irregular migratory situation on the Dominican territory https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-35236-haiti-news-zapping.html due to the significant financial burden for the Dominican Public Treasury https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-35171-haiti-dom-rep-end-of-health-services-to-illegal-haitians-except-in-emergencies.html and the indefinite suspension of new student visas for Haitians https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-35153-haiti-flash-suspension-of-haitian-student-visas-in-the-dominican-rep-clarification.html and their automatic non-renewal for those who are already in Dominican universities https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-35277-icihaiti-diplomacy-dr-will-reconsider-the-haitian-student-visa-program.html
