Haiti - Social : Ambassador Rodolfo Mattarollo pays a final tribute to J. C. Bajeux

The Ambassador Rodolfo Mattarollo, Special Representative of the Technical Secretariat of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR-Haiti) and friend of Jean-Claude Bajeux, "salutes the memory of those who belonged to the families of these heroic and lucid intellectuals of the Caribbean who have shared the dream of freedom of Simon Bolivar and fought to liberate their country from all forms of alienation and repression."

"It is with great sadness and a deep emotion that the Technical Secretariat of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) in Haiti and his Special Representative, the Ambassador Rodolfo Mattarollo, have learned the death of former Minister of Culture and human rights activist, Jean-Claude Bajeux, which occurred Friday, August 5.

The Ambassador Rodolfo Mattarollo, who was his friend, salutes the memory of those who belonged to the families of these heroic and lucid intellectuals of the Caribbean who have shared the dream of freedom of Simon Bolivar and fought to liberate their country from all forms of alienation and repression. He referred to the exceptional destiny of the one who, forced into exile because of his fight against the Duvalier dictatorship, became a legend with his Puerto Rican students before becoming Minister of Culture in the country in 1994.

Author of a brilliant anthology Treaty of the Haitian literature in its Creole language that he particularly cherished, Jean-Claude Bajeux has never ceased, with all the dignity of an intellectual committed to the fundamental principles, to fight for the respect of human rights. The Ambassador Mattarollo keeps of him the memory of the "sweetness in indignation" at the return to Haiti of the former dictator Duvalier, indignation which he had always testified face to the historical injustices done to the people of this country. His capacity of indignation had grown over the years and what is for others the twilight of the life, had given him a magnitude that his departure does not tarnish.

On behalf of the Technical Secretariat of UNASUR in Haiti, the Special Representative extended his deepest and warm sympathy to his wife Sylvie and his family and friends whom he shares the pain."
