Haiti - Politic : Police violence against demonstrators, Senator Lambert dismayed

The President of the Senate Joseph Lambert in a correspondence addressed to Frantz Elbé, the Director General ai of the National Police of Haiti (PNH) said to be dismayed by the strong intervention of the agents of the PNH against the workers of the textile sector who demonstrated peacefully to demand an adjustment of the minimum wage. Referring in particular to the demonstration of the workers of the National Company of Industrial Parks (SONAPI) dispersed with tear gas.

Recall that the police, Wednesday and Thursday, February 10, had violently dispersed the crowd of demonstrators by making intensive use of tear gas. 13 demonstrators, including a pregnant woman, had to be urgently admitted to a hospital of the Office of Insurance, Accidents at Work, Sickness and Maternity after breathing tear gas.

"Considering the increase in the price of transport compared to the insecurity which seriously hinders traffic in certain areas, in particular in Martissant and Croix-des-Bouquets, the dizzying acceleration in the price of basic necessities and high cost of living in general, you will be pleased, Mr Director General, to admit that these workers were rightfully claiming what is due to them," wrote Senator Lambert inviting Frantz Elbé to launch an investigation to identify the police officers involved and take the corresponding sanctions for their faults.
