Haiti - Social : Celebration of International Women's Day

The contribution of women and girls to building a more sustainable and egalitarian future for all Haitians is magnified by the Government of Haiti and the UN as part of the celebration of International Women's Day, celebrated every year on March 8.

The day, which will be held around the theme "Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow", recognizes the leading role that women and girls play in building a more equal and sustainable world.

Sofia Loréus, the Minister for the Status of Women and Women's Rights with the support of the UN, is organizing an event on human rights and sustainable development. This event will include addresses by Prime Minister ai Ariel Henry, Minister Loréus, United Nations Resident Coordinator ai Fernando Hiraldo, UN Women Head of Mission Marie Goretti Nduwayo and the representative of the United Nations Humanitarian Fund. Population (UNFPA), Saidou Kabore. Women's organizations and other representatives of civil society as well as technical, academic and financial partners will also contribute to the discussions.

During the event, 30 Haitian institutions, recognized for their "leadership" will be honored.

Gender equality is one of the 17 targets of the globally agreed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SDG 5 recognizes that gender equality is not just a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.

The UN says promoting gender equality in the context of the climate crisis and disaster risk reduction is one of the greatest global challenges of the 21st century and that women and girls are leaders effective and powerful that can bring change.

The fight for gender equality is a long-term process. With the support of the United Nations and other partners, the Government and civil society must get involved to initiate the necessary reforms and promote the participation of women in the search for a sustainable future for Haiti.

A group of United Nations agencies from the OneUN Plan in Haiti, in partnership with the Association of Women Entrepreneurs of the Chamber of Commerce and the National Integrated Financing Framework, are consulting on the inclusion of the gender dimension in the support the implementation of public policies such as the National Policy for Social Protection and Promotion (PNPPS).
