Haiti - Environment : 137 earthquakes in February (down) 11/03/2022 10:50:41
In its monthly bulletin, the Technical Unit of Seismology of the Bureau of Mines and Energy, reveals that between February 1st to 28, 2022, 137 earthquakes of magnitude between 1.3 and 4.9 were recorded on the national and regional seismological networks (Ayiti-seisms, UTS-BME, RD-OSPL-Loyola) for the entire national territory. Four of them reached magnitudes between 4.0 and 4.9, including 1 in the North-West and 3 in Grand'Anse. Compared to the month of January (311), the month of February recorded 174 fewer earthquakes, a reduction of almost 55.9%. This decrease is due first to the decreases over time in the aftershocks of the earthquake of August 14, 2021 (main shock of magnitude 7.2 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34479-haiti-flash-magnitude-72-earthquake-in-the-nippes.html ) near the Asile in the Nippes and then to the gradual decreases of the new aftershocks of the earthquake of January 24, 2022 (main shock of magnitude 5.3 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-35794-haiti-flash-2-earthquakes-of-magnitude-greater-than-5-provisional-report-update-3-48-pm.html ) near Anse-à-Veau, still in the Nips. In February 2022, departments most affected: Nippes: 44 earthquakes (32.1%); Grand’Anse: 44 earthquakes (32.1%); South: 31 earthquakes (22.6%); That is a total of 119 earthquakes out of 137 for these three departments, which represents 86.8% of the earthquakes recorded for the month of February in the 10 departments. The depth of the earthquakes that occurred during the month of February is between 0 and 84 km and are qualified as superficial earthquakes.
