Haiti - NOTICE : Anténor Firmin doctoral mobility program, applications open
The French Embassy in Haiti, the Francophonie University Agency (AUF) in the Caribbean, the Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH) and the Research Institute for Development (IRD) are launching the 3rd edition of the Anténor Firmin program, intended to support doctoral mobility, thus strengthening research training and scientific cooperation.

The objective of the program is to provide both support for the international mobility of doctoral students and to encourage the establishment of international co-directions and international thesis co-supervision agreements between a Haitian university and a foreign university (in France or elsewhere), both members of the AUF.

Mobilities and their funding are multi-annual; the projects presented must therefore schedule travel for the duration of the thesis (3 years max). The Anténor Firmin doctoral mobility program will cover research stays abroad, which may last a maximum of six months per academic year.

To whom this call for applications is destined :

  • PhD students who will enroll in the 1st year of the thesis during the 2022/2023 academic year for a period of 3 years;
  • Doctoral students enrolled in the 2nd year of thesis for a period of 2 years
  • PhD students enrolled in the 3rd year of the thesis for a period of 1 year, whose system already provides for international co-direction or an international joint supervision agreement.

In the 3 cases where the system provides for international co-direction or an international co-supervision agreement.

Priority will be given to academic staff, especially women scientists from Haitian universities (teachers, lecturers, temporary workers) who wish to obtain a doctoral degree.

Eligibility Criteria :

  • Be of Haitian nationality and reside in Haiti;
  • Hold a master's degree (M2) at least, or equivalent, at the end of a training course conferring research skills;
  • Have obtained the agreement of a thesis supervisor at their home university (in Haiti) and a thesis supervisor at a host university (in France or elsewhere) to co-supervise the thesis.

Research areas :
All applications, in all fields of study will be accepted. The selection committee of the Anténor Firmin program will pay particular attention to applications in the following areas:

  • Climate change and risks;
  • Pedagogical innovation, educational technologies;
  • Intercomprehension, memory and movement of populations;
  • Sea, water, sanitation and renewable energies;
  • Health, biodiversity and food security;
  • Economy, Finance and Banking.

Possibility of co-financing :
The Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD) is associated with the Anténor Firmin program by offering additional funding for two laureates with regard to the quality of the file and the research topic chosen. IRD funding will cover the months the doctoral student will be in Haiti, for a maximum of six months per year. Applicants do not have any additional documents to submit; they will be informed of the IRD's decision as soon as possible.

The selection committee of the Anténor Firmin program will be particularly attentive to applications that present material support or co-financing by the home university or the host university, a Haitian institution, an international or foreign organization.

The main criteria used for the selection procedure are :

  • The academic quality of the file (training, diplomas, employment status);
  • The scientific quality of the research project (issue, content, schedule, methodology);
  • The appreciation of the two co-directors on the importance of the research, the expected benefits, the international collaboration for the university and the host laboratory and the Haitian university;
  • The expected results and impacts for the Haitian and Caribbean scientific community and/or the economic and social development of Haiti and the Caribbean region;
