Haiti - FLASH : USA announces the lifting of the border migration restriction under «Title 42»

The United States announced Friday, April 1st, the lifting as of May 23, 2022, of the immigration restrictions under "Title 42" put in place at the start of the pandemic. These restrictions have allowed for more than 2 years the immediate expulsion of migrants arrested at the border without the possibility of filing an asylum application on American soil. Only unaccompanied minors could stay in the United States.

This decision was taken by the health authorities after considering the current public health conditions and the greater availability of tools to fight Covid.

Migrant rights organizations welcomed the decision.

A decision that should increase the arrivals of migrants at the southern border of the United States, already at a historic level.

"We know that smugglers will spread false information to take advantage of vulnerable migrants [...] but let's be clear : those who do not have a legal basis to stay in the United States will be deported [...] The Government has a strategy to manage any potential increase in the number of migrants apprehended at the border," wrote Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in the statement.

Alejandro Mayorkas explains that the Government has put in place measures to deal with the situation "600 agents have already been redeployed to the border to process the files of arrivals, assess asylum applications and quickly expel those who are not eligible emphasizing that if necessary, additional staff can come as reinforcements.

"Worst domestic news today: the Biden Administration will admit double or more the number of undocumented” immigrants at the border," wrote Republican Senator Mitt Romney on his Twitter account, who however sees this as good news for his Party for mid-term elections...

Democratic Senator Joe Manchin denounces "a frightening decision" saying "We are not at all ready to deal with this influx"
