Haiti - Europe : Details of the EU assistance on the risk management 22/08/2011 15:00:02 "With this new support, [5.47 million euros], the European Union reaffirms its commitment in favor of most vulnerable populations faced to the risks associated with natural phenomena to which the country must constantly cope" has declared Paul Webber, Charge d'Affaires of the Delegation of the European Union in Haiti. "...If you want to save lives, one of the priorities is to strengthen the knowledge of people about the risks they face and improve their ability to respond" emphasized Damien Berrendorf, ECHO Haiti Representative. "Experience shows that the most effective rescue efforts, are usually the work of the people themselves, during and after natural extreme situation." A total of 11 projects will be implemented over the next 18 months, in different municipalities of the departments of Artibonite, West, Nippes and Southeast. The beneficiaries [near 1, 3 million people] include the inhabitants of IDP camps, neighborhoods of the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince and the school students of Petit-Goâve and Grand-Goâve and other rural populations. The Rapid Response Brigades and the Civil Protection Committees will also benefit from capacity building. The emergency preparedness projects, aim to limit the negative impact of extreme natural phenomena by improving the response capacities of communities and local government institutions in areas at risk. They give the people of early information systems that enable communities to react before that a natural event, destroying homes, crops or livestock. These systems provide them with training on the organization of evacuations and equipping them with first aid equipment. These systems ensures them a training on the organization of evacuations, and equips them with first aid equipment. The projects include both : public awareness campaigns and of education and that a very important work with the local authorities responsible for emergency response and minor works to limit the damage. The assistance of the Commission will be implemented in the field by humanitarian organizations long-term partners of ECHO, including Action Against Hunger, German Agro Action, Cooperazione Internazionale (COOPI), Concern, Gruppo di Volontariato Civile (GVC) , Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB), as well as the Spanish, French and German Red Cross the International Federation of Red Cross and UNESCO.
