Haiti - FLASH : A small plane crashes in a street of Carrefour 11 victims

On Wednesday April 20, 2022 in the afternoon, a small Cesna-207 plane crashed on the route des rails (commune of Carrefour) in the locality of Christophe Channel, not far from the police station, causing panic in population.

The plane had taken off from Port-au-Prince at 3:44 p.m. local time bound for Jacmel, (Dept. South-East), according to Laurent Joseph Dumas the Director General of the National Office of Civil Aviation (OFNAC) specifying that the plane's engine had failed and that the pilot had made a distress call at 4:04 p.m., stating that it was a private flight and that the aircraft did not have a commercial license.

The toll is heavy and stands at 6 dead and 5 seriously injured. The 4 passengers of the plane died in the crash, the pilot (Amado R. Gutierres, a foreigner) who had survived was rushed to Diquini hospital but succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday evening . On impact, the plane killed a motorcycle taxi driver and hit a truck, seriously injuring five who were taken to hospital.

OFNAC technicians were mobilized immediately after the accident. A crisis unit was set up to collect the first elements of information on site to be used in the investigation.

Reacting to this tragedy, Prime Minister a.i. Ariel Henry declared on his twitter account "I am deeply saddened, following the crash of a small plane on the road to Carrefour, which caused deaths and injuries. I extend my sympathies to the families of the victims, whom this new tragedy has just plunged into the greatest desolation. I have instructed the competent authorities, in particular OFNAC, to immediately launch an investigation to determine the causes of this tragic accident which is mourning the entire country."
