At the opening of the VII Hybrid (face-to-face and virtual) Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Summit on Financing for Development, taking place in New York from 25 to 28 April, participants heard the call of the Secretary General of the United Nations to "urgently save the Sustainable Development Goals" and to come to the aid of the countries most vulnerable to a world economy under pressure.

In a message addressed to the forum by the voice of his Deputy Secretary-General, António Guterres underlined that financing for development remains precisely one of the solutions to achieve these objectives and bring many economies on the verge of crisis out of the crisis. insolvency.

The Secretary-General recalled that the Inter-Agency Task Force on Financing for Development, which he recently created, recommends that countries rapidly mobilize financing from all available sources, calling on the international community to fulfill its commitments in terms of official development assistance and financial institutions to favor emergency financing mechanisms, including those of the International Monetary Fund (IMF)

Speaking by videoconference, Prime Minister Ariel Henry called for more concrete support for the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) like Haiti. "At a time when States are suffering the double shock of the pandemic and the conflict in Ukraine, it is more than urgent to act, and a global, concerted action and effective solidarity are necessary to achieve the realization of the 2030 Agenda," he said.

He also called on the international community to redouble its efforts, noting that funding is not adequate for today's challenges. "The situation of the LDCs is critical, and their challenges immense. Global, joint action is needed to build more inclusive economies, reduce poverty and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals," said the Prime Minister.
